Elite Meet Information 
The 2009 Elite Meet will take place pon Tuesday, July 28, at Briarcliffe Swim Club. Meet warm-ups are set for 4:30 PM, with a meet start time of 5:30 PM.

A roster of athletes from the Suburban Swim League who are scheduled to swim is available below. Please check this list to confirm whether or not you/your child is swimming in the meet.

1. Take 476 to Exit 5 (Springfield/Lima)

Championship Entries Tips for Swimming - Posted July 5, 2009
Entries for both Divisional and A Championships are due on Saturday, July 11 (must be brought to Marple Newtown Swim Club...check your packet from the June Coaches' Meeting for details).

Below coaches/reps can find some important tips to keep in mind when doing entries for champs.

1. Swimmers can enter a maximum of four (4) individual events between Divisionals and A Champs, provided one of the events is either the Distance Free or I.M. events (for example, a swimmer could do the 50 Free at Divisionals, and the I.M., 50 Back, and 50 Fly at A Champs, provided qualifying times are achieved)
2. Swimmers who qualify for A Champs in an event CANNOT swim that same event at Divisional Champs.
3. When doing entries for the Distance Free, it is always best to do a time trial for your swimmers (do not multiply the swimmer's 50 time by 4, for example, for a 200 Free...bad idea!). If you do the time trial in a YARDS pool, be sure to multiply the time by 1.11 for an approximate METER time for any 100 or 200 (for example, a time of 1:21.43 in YARDS would convert to a 1:30.39 in METERS...make sure to change the time to seconds when doing the conversion!!!)
4. If you are timing a swimmer for the 400 Meter Free in a YARDS pool, it is best to time the swimmer in a 500-YARD free (not a 400 Free). Team Manager's suggested conversion for a 500 Yard time to a 400 Meter time is to multiply the YARDS time by 0.875 to get the meter time (for example, a time of 6:00.00 in the 500 Y Free would convert to a 5:15.00 for 400 Meters.
5. If you time your swimmers for the 100/200/400 Free in a YARDS pool, you will need to enter their CONVERTED METER TIME in the "CUSTOM" column of the entries screen for events for A Champs (if you fail to do this, you risk having your swimmers seriously over-seeded for the event at A Champs...their Yards Time will show up as their seed time....YIKES!).
6. When doing entries for an I.M. swim, do not add together the swimmer's best time in each of the four strokes. Do a time trial!!! Convert METER times to yards by dividing the time by 1.11.
7. When doing entries for relays at A Champs, be sure to enter the relay at the best time actually swam during the season (TM will give a "best relay" time by adding up the four best times....this time is often FASTER than your relay's best time from the season, causing your relay team to be possibly over-seeded at A's, and potentially bumping a more-worthy relay out of the top heat). You simply need to enter this actual best relay time in the CUSTOM column of the entries screen.
8. Be sure to enter swimmers in events he or she can LEGALLY SWIM; if there are any illegal parts to the swimmer's stroke, he or she will be disqualified at Divisional/A Champs.
9. A great way to prevent mistakes with entries is to email your team a preliminary entry report from team manager, sorted alphabetically by name - if you do this before Saturday, you can save a lot of aggravation down the road.

The latest Top 40 List is now available for your viewing pleasure. All times that qualify for A Champs are designated with an "A" next to them. Keep in mind that all posted times are converted to SHORT COURSE YARDS.

It is important that all reps/coaches email Matt Stewart the MEET MANAGER BACKUP file of the meet in order to post all results in the same manner, and in order to post the Top 40. Matt Stewart will not post the Top 40 until all results are submitted. This includes JV Meet Results.

DO NOT email the Team Manager Results File or the .html results file; those can all be generated from the Meet Manager Backup file (which is why it is most convenient to send that file).

This week, we are still missing the following results: JV Wallingford @ JV Martins Dam, and JV Marple @ JV Plymouth.

The goal is to post all results by the Saturday following all Wednesday night meets. If you are not seeing your team's results, the home team from this past week's meet did not send any results in the form of a Meet Manager Backup file.

For those who are emailing the Meet Manager Backups, the procedure is as follows:

1. From Meet Manager's main screen, make sure the correct meet is open (e.g., ASCvs SSC.mdb).
2. Go to FILE > BACKUP
3. Backup to the meet to a file location you will remember (click OK throughout the series of windows that open during this process).
4. Email the Meet Manager Backup as an attachment to Matt Stewart.

New USS Rule Regarding Suits (Please Read!) - Posted July 4, 2009
The introduction of high-tech suits, etc. has caused headaches (and great times) all over the sport of swimming, and interpretation of the rules regarding tech-suits has been challenging to say the least.

Our league operates under the rules for USS swimming at all meets, inlcuding dual meets and championship meets. One rule that recently passed pertains to 12 & Under swimmers, and swimmers, coaches, and parents will need to take notice (a suit that you/your child may have worn before may now be illegal). The USS rule book now reads as follows regarding suits for 12 & Under Swimmers:

Allowable Swimsuits for 12 & U Swimmers

At its September 2008 meeting, the USA Swimming House of Delegates adopted an amendment to its rule on swimwear design. The amended rule, which became effective May 15, 2009, reads as follows:

102.9 Swimwear
.1 Design

A. Swimsuits worn for all 12 & Under age group defined competition shall not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder, nor past the knee.

B. Swimsuits worn for competition must be non-transparent and conform to the current concept of the appropriate.

C. The Referee shall have the authority to bar offenders from the competition until they comply with the rule.

For those of you who may be scratching your heads to figure this out, if you wear your own team's suit, your suit is approved.

Top 40, Week 2 - Posted Monday, June 29, 2009
The Top 40 for Week 2 is now available below.

I would like to explain to all swimmers and parents that the "A" designation next to a swimmer's time is merely a guideline...not a DEFINITE qualification for A Champs. The league's final determination of A Champs qualifications is the use of the YARDS QUALIFICATION TIMES (there is no official leauge meter qualifying times, other than for the Meter Distance Freestyle events at A Champs).

There is a possibility when looking at these lists that a swimmer's time from a meter pool shows up as a Yards-converted A Qualifying time...this would be due to a meter converted qualifying seeing it as an "A" time, due mostly to rounding, etc.

Bottom Line: Your converted meter time to yards MUST meet the YARDS Qualifying time to qualify for A Champs. If you see differently in some rare occurences on the Top 40 List, this would mostly be attributed to rounding out meter converted qualifying times.

I am working to correct any places where these rounding errors may occur.

Please note that these lists are NOT what determines who swims what at A Champs; it is simply a ranking of the Top 40 Times in each event, for each age group during the season. This is NOT THE SAME as the Top 40 List used in the Suburban Aquatic Swim League (winter league) in which this list determines who goes to A Champs.

Any swimmer who has qualified an A Champs qualifying time in an event will have an "A" next to their times on this list.

2009 Season Underway
The SSL kicked off its 2009 season on Wednesday with varsity meet action, despite the rain. Results for the first set of Varsity meets (with the exception of Plymouth vs. St. Albans and Rose Valley vs. Hidden Hollow) are posted on the results page.

Rose Valley and Hidden Hollow have re-scheduled their varsity meet for Monday night, at 6:00 PM.
